2112 and Fantastic Frank are proud to present a selection of works by late Danish artist Eva Weis Bentzon (1944 – 2018).
The exhibition includes abstract paintings from the 80s, 90s and 00s as well as four landscape paintings inspired by the artist’s travels to Greenland.
During her lifetime, Eva Weis Bentzon lived and worked in Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Paris, and New York, and was driven by an ongoing curiosity in natural science and the modern human condition. Weis Bentzon’s paintings from the 80 and 90s present bold, expressionist brush strokes that bear witness to their moment of creation and embody the artist’s passion and impulsivity. Modern dance and the way a dancer’s body interact with space and gravity were also topics of investigation and she strongly admired cross disciplinary practices such as Merce Cunningham and Jasper Johns’ collaborations.
In the 80s, Weis Bentzon urged to be present in the epicentre of ‘the new’ and for a longer period she moved to New York, leaving her husband and two younger daughters in Denmark. In the US, she became a part of Manhattan’s dynamic art scene where groundbreaking artistic creation and discussions took place. She became good friends with Jasper Johns, exhibited in a group show at the infamous Leo Castelli Gallery, and had three of her works placed in the Guggenheim collection.
